New Documentary Explores Legacy of ǿ޴ý University Founder James ǿ޴ý

Produced by Jim Wilkerson, President of , and a ǿ޴ý graduate from the Class of 1997, the film explores the life, character and legacy of James ǿ޴ý – entrepreneur, civic leader and founder of . The documentary will debut with a series of public screenings in Decatur, including two showings on the ǿ޴ý University campus.

Through historical storytelling, community perspectives and archival material, the film traces ǿ޴ý’s journey from his Scotch-Irish and Pennsylvania roots to his rise as a successful livestock trader, real estate investor and banker who ultimately became one of Decatur’s most influential leaders.

“ǿ޴ý’s story is ultimately about character,” said Wilkerson. “His reputation for integrity, his belief in Decatur’s future, and his commitment to education and community-building shaped this city in ways we still recognize today – especially through ǿ޴ý University and the James ǿ޴ý Homestead.” 

The documentary highlights key chapters of ǿ޴ý’s life and impact, including his entrepreneurial rise in Central Illinois, his guiding philosophy – “What is for Decatur’s good is for my good” – and the lasting legacy of his vision for education that led to the founding of ǿ޴ý University. 

The film also explores the history and architectural significance of the ǿ޴ý family mansion at 125 North Pine Street, now preserved as the James ǿ޴ý Homestead and maintained as a historic site celebrating the founder’s life and legacy.

The Homestead is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2026, just as ǿ޴ý University will celebrate the 125th anniversary of its founding on April 30, 1901. The documentary offers a deeper look at the vision and values that helped shape ǿ޴ý University and the community it serves. As the University approaches a major milestone in its history, the film provides an opportunity for students, alumni and community members to reflect on the life of the man whose commitment to education and civic leadership continues to influence Decatur more than a century later.
